Red dot sight & Parallax?
I’m trying to get a better understanding of Parallax settings on red dot scopes. I notice that no matter who makes the scope, that nobody makes an adjustable Parallax. Aimpoint claims that there scopes are parallax-free. How do I compensate for parallax above or below the setting for a red dot scope? My intention is to put a red dot scope on a Ruger 10/22 LR, shooting at 20 – 80 meters. I find it frustrating talking to retailers because they discourage red dot scopes. Thank you for your help. Parallax – in a nut shell – is the issue where moving your head small amounts relative to the cross hairs changes the zero of the scope.
Parallax is a problem only found in variable power scopes. Parallax is most notable in target scopes beyond 100 yards (common) and high end benchrest scopes (that most of us cannot afford).
Red dot sights are parallax free – so long as your mellon (head) is close to where it should be. The reason – the dot is displayed on the same surface you are looking at. If the dot were displayed on a different optic – which a reflex or holo sight does not have – then it may have an adjustment, but they don’t – because they are parallax free.
Next – red dot scopes are ideal for close combat situations (hologrphic sites) and target shooting during timed fire and rapid fire stages (pistol). They are especially great for small game hunting since you do not have a rear sight and a front sight to waste time trying to line up on your moving target.
I have lots of open spaces where I hunt – a red dot sight is not an advantage. On on my Ruger 10/22. I have the BSA “Sweet 22″ on my suppressed 10/22 – this scope will allow you to calibrate it for 38 or 40 grain bullet drops – once calibrated you can instantly change the cross hair zero from 60 feet (20 meters) to 80 meters (180 feet) or anywhere in between 50 feet and 340 feet. This is an affordable scope – under $90 for the hunting model that is 4x-12x. The up side to this scope is the magnification and ability to zoom and hit your target exactly where you want…….. most red dot scopes have a 15 to 20 MOA dot – too big for bunnes at 300 feet, and I doubt you want to pay $650 for a 5MOA dot site just to put on a 10/22.
To really wrap your brain around parallax – borrow a cheap scope that is 6-18x and has an adjustable front lens for parallax – and mess with the adjustment at a target around 300 yards away. Zero the rifle – then change the parallex adjustment, and change your head positon. Holding the rifle steady you will see the crosshairs ‘lie’ to you. Very annoying and disconcerting. This is one reason why you about never see ‘real’ hunters with a big scope.
If you are always hunting in brush and close in shots – I can see where a red dot would be the bee’s knees. Even if you had a parallax adjustment – once in focus – you would not mess with it until you tried to shoot beyond 100 meters. So, this is pretty much a non-issue for you.
As a side note – 22 scopes with a parallax adjustment are pretty specialized for target work. You don’t see folks hunting with them because the difference between having it set for 50 feet and trying to jump to 100 feet for a bunny, grouse, or fox is a very blurry mess that takes time to adjust.

PS – I really like the TruGlow. For $64 at MidwayUSA.com they would be neat on the 10/22. This is the sight guys in Iraq ask mom and dad to mail them as a back up sight on their rifles.
