Has anyone else heard of a Beretta U22 Neos extractor blowing off the wepaon?
I bought a U22 Neos and on the first trip to the range using Remington High Velocity Golden Bullet (just what I had at the time) there was a much louder than normal bang and some sharp fragments hit me in the face and my clip shot out of the handle on about the 4th clip and the extractor and spring were no where to be found. The 22lr case was split in the barrel. Anyone else have this issue or heard of it? Beretta is fixing it now but I’d like to go to the range knowing my gun isn’t going to blow up in my face.
A split case is probably indicative of a problem with the ammo, not the gun. I’ve been shooting for nearly 30 years, and experienced exactly 1 split case. Either the round was overpressured, or there was a flaw in the case.
In either case, the fact that the gun had some damage is not surprising. The extractor on the U22 is easy to remove, just held in there by a little spring-loaded pin. The good news is that the extractor assembly is quite cheap, and easy to replace. I know, Beretta is fixing yours, but just for future reference.
Look at it this way… when the case ruptured, there was suddenly a LOT of extra pressure in areas that were never designed for it. The magazine blowing out is like a safety valve (and, incidentally, why you should never cup the grip of a semi-auto). The extractor flying off just was never designed for that kind of force. Each of these, though, sapped energy from the malfunction, and helped to prevent more serious damage to the slide or the frame, much like “crumple zones” in cars.
I would discard the ammo that you were using, or at least contact Remington, tell them about the incident, and see if there is a recall on any particular lots.
