Screaming sounds coming from the woods at night?

There’s a very loud, very drawn out and pronounced scream that comes from my woods occasionally late at night (always after midnight usually). It sounds like a young woman’s blood curdling scream, but just somewhere in your mind it doesn’t register as a human creating that sound. Someone said it was a fox, but all the fox screams I’ve heard sounded nothing like it and were very short. Someone said it might be a bobcat, but I could never find a clip of a bobcat making a sort of “screaming” noise. Someone else said it might have been a panther, but just like the fox, it doesn’t sound the same. Any ideas?

It’s a mountain lion. I have spent many nights in the woods, miles from any house or road, camping with only a fire and a canvas tent, and have been wakened late at night by the same type of blood-curdling screams. I have seen them close to my fire – eyes twinkling high up in the trees as they scouted my camp out. I build my fire up and make enough noise to drive them away – they are usually just curious and are generally more scared of you than you are of them but if not driven off they will enter your camp in search of food and can then be very dangerous.

Edit 1: Sorry, not owls – even a screech owl. The screech they make is very distinct and sounds nothing like a human scream, as opposed to a mountain lion, which DOES make a scream that sounds EXACTLY like a human woman screaming in her death throes.

Edit 2: AmazonWarrior – I am NOT “putting you down” – did you not read what I wrote? I am a 40 year old man who has spent a LOT of time camping and hiking in a wooded region south of my home that is 40 miles long and 30 miles deep – that’s over 1000 square miles of terrain. And I have heard MANY owls and other creatures in the woods – and the only creature I have ever heard that sounds like a woman dying is the scream of a mountain lion, or MAYBE a rabbit caught in a trap, but once you hear an owl there is no mistaking it for anything else.

Edit 3: AmazonWarrior – my edit about owls was in no way inflammatory – why do you insist on attacking me in a VERY aggressive and rude manner? I do not need to be an animal “expert” when I have spent YEARS in the woods listening to and seeing these animals. Why are you getting SO bent out of shape?

Edit 4: AmazonWarrior – yes, you said it might be an owl. Yes I disagreed with you based on my own experiences over thirty years of exploring the wilderness. Get over it. You need to learn that in life other people are GOING to disagree with you, and not all of them are “attacking” you. Yes, you are harassing me because I was in NO way RUDE to you but you have been UNFAILINGLY rude to ME. I have not altered your name, why do you feel the need to rudely alter mine?
What is your PROBLEM??
