Wild dogs in the California desert? What exactly are they?

A while ago I took a road trip from Seattle to San Diego traveling on I-5 all the way down. While I was driving through the ‘deserty’ part of California I saw a weird wild dog (sort of looked like a small hairless greyhound, or like a fox or coyote with mange) it was running around by the highway and after asking my father about it, he said it’s pretty common to see lone wild dogs in that area.

The question is, are these wild dogs just domesticated pets that turned feral or are they a species all their own? What are they??

There are a lot of feral domestic dogs in that part of California and ranging into northern Mexico. Many of the “chupacabra” hoaxes have been feral domestic dogs, mostly Mexican Hairless. They’re often cited as being dogs with mange, but the hairless condition is genetic and not the disease mange. Mexican Hairless dogs are quite beautiful and they range from having a thin coat of hair all over to almost completely hairless (…like a human) and everything in between.

It is sad that they’re left to be feral, and of course relatively dangerous to wildlife and some small farm animals. Pets are a responsibility that too many people think can be disregarded at any time.
