Is tearing through the wall to replace the bathtub faucet unavoidable?
My Gerber shower faucet has a “bad cylinder” and is leaking profusely. The plumber searched for a replacement cylinder at multiple stores but couldn’t find one explaining that Gerber was an off-brand and almost impossible to find parts for. He said the only option was to replace the entire faucet with a new set and he’d have to go through the wall to do so. Does replacing a faucet always mean tearing up the wall?
Thank you all for your responses. I see two options from here:
1) Replace the whole thing, going through the wall is unavoidable
2) Spend more time finding a replacement part
A follow-up question: is a “cylinder” the same thing as a shower valve?
pretty much yep. Unless the person who built it in the first place left an acess panel on the back of the wall. Sometimes if you are lucky, there will be a closet on the oposite side of the wall so the damage in not readily visible. I should be possible to cut a reasonable size neat hole and cover with an acess panel or decorative something.
