Gerber vs. Leatherman Multi-tools?

I want to buy a multi-tool to replace my old penknife. I want a multi-tool for the addition of a set of pliers BUT am unsure which one to get.

I’ve pretty much narrowed the choice down to GERBER vs. LEATHERMAN. Specifically the Gerber Multi-plier 600 (I love the removable saw, the saw on my old swiss knife was pretty blunt after a years use after that it was a waste of space) and the leatherman wave.

I’ve heard a lot of contradiction views on the brands, some say gerber have very solid build quality, other that gerber are flimsy and broke after a couple of uses. The same goes for the leatherman.

Any opinions appreciated.

ALSO I quite like the look of the gerber DET 600, whilst I’m sure most people don’t need a tool that has a component to make fuse holes in blocks of C4 explosive, but I’m in my 2nd year of a degree in special effects and could see myself in a situation in the future where it would prove useful.

I am a Gerber girl. I have had mine for about 12 years and when I first got it, I was touring with a theatre company and using it all the time. What put me off a Leatherman was the fact that you could almost cut your finger off when trying to close it with one hand (or perhaps that was just me!). I love the flick action to open it and the fact that the blades have a safety lock on them, but you could still open it and close it with one hand (useful when up a ladder!). Ultimately the choice is yours though. Bit jealous about the removable saw though. Mine has premier run stamped on the side, but it looks similar to the picture I saw of the 600.
