My 4 month old ate solids for the first time…?

My 4.5 month old ate solids for the first time last night and he did great! He absolutely loved the spoon – he kept grabbing it and pulling it into his mouth while I was feeding him. He would also start whining between bites until the next one came…in anticipation for each spoonful. He ate a few tablespoons, I had put half of one of those little plastic Gerber fruit containers on the bowl and he ate the entire bowl! I gave him Apple last night.

Are these are all signs that he’s ready for a small amount of solids daily? His stomach seems to have handled last night’s meal fine.

Also, I also bought sippy cups that say 4months + on them, should I try giving him a small amount of water/juice from the cup, or just stick with solids and formula until 6 months?

**He’s formula fed since birth. It’s been 6 years since I’ve done this so I feel clueless! thanks guys :)

My oldest started at 4 1/2 months, my youngest was not ready until 6 (tongue thrust reflex was still there). Most babies will like fruit, especially formula-fed babies – formula does not taste good, and fruit is so sweet in comparison.
Right now, it is about experimentation, not nutrition. Formula is where nutrition will come from. Once a day, offer a few tablespoons of food, like you just did. Wait 3-4 days before you introduce a different food (a reaction can take a few seconds or a few days to appear, and you want to know where it came from if there is one).
If you are going to use jarred foods, use the Stage 1 (single food) jars. Peas, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, green beans, apples, bananas, pears – these were among the first I tried. Also, stuff that does not come in jars: potatoes, rice (you can do rice cereal if you want, there is not much nutritional value, but again, it is about getting him used to eating and introducing new foods right now), avocados. Wheat products, yogurt, cheese and egg yolks after 8 months. No egg whites, honey, peanut butter, milk in the first year.
We did a little water once we started solids, but only for experimenting. Once we started a full solid meal per day, we added more. We dilute juice (75-80% water). We did a full meal at around 7-8 months, added a second around 9-10 months, then a third around 11-12 months. By some standards, this is too early.
There is a lot of conflicting info, and almost anything that anyone posts will receive a bunch of thumbs downs from people who “know better”. I’m not telling you what is “right”, I am just sharing what we did.
