Toilet tank water level keeps dropping.?

How can I get more of a secure seal between the rubber “plug” and the hole in the tank so the water level stops slowly sinking causing the pump to trigger the addition of more water every 5 minutes? Are there gaskets, washers anything to tighten the fit? I’m on my second plug .. the first was universal .. the one I just purchased was a Gerber brand to match the tank.

The part you’ve replaced is called the “flapper” the thing that moves when you flush the toilet, opening the hole so the water can travel down into the bowl. If you installed a new flapper correctly and it still leaks, but no water is coming out of the seam between the bowl and the toilet body, that means you need to either clean or replace the fitting that the flapper sits on because it has gotten worn or corroded so the new flapper can’t make a tight, smooth seal. (Basically it takes two parts to make a good seal – the flapper and the flapper seat. If you fixed one and it still doesn’t work the other part is the problem.)

Turn off the water and drain the tank – then carefully run your finger around the rim of the hole where the flapper sits – if there is any crud like hard water deposits, you may be able to just clean the flapper seat without replacing it. If it is cracked or uneven or cleaning it doesn’t do the trick, then you have to replace the whole flush vale seat assembly, which is a hassle because you have to take the tank off the toilet.

The part you need is basically one piece – the little tube sticking up out of the water where that hose pumps the water down into when the toilet runs and the flapper seat is one thing. Go looking for that piece in the home center. It is called a flush valve seat/overflow tube or a flush valve seat assembly. Look on the web for how-to videos etc. for replacing the flush-valve seat assembly and you will see what it entails and whether you feel up to doing it yourself or calling a plumber. It’s not a terribly complicated job, but the main issue is you have to be careful with the toilet tank – you drop it or crack it because you overtightened the bolts – then you get to buy yourself a new toilet.

If you do take it on – buy replacement gaskets for the bolts that hold the tank on the toilet (you will see the screws at the bottom of the tank, there are gaskets that keep those screw holes from leaking) – chances are if the toilet is old enough to need a new valve seat assembly, when you untighten those old gaskets they will fall apart or leak, and so you will get everything back together having fixed your problem, except now the tank drips water on the floor, so better to just replace those while the tank is off at the same time.

Also, I think the home center sells a kit that has everything – all the internal parts in one box – so you can just upgrade everything at once while you have the tank drained and off. I know they used to have those, but not sure whether they still sell them.
