Ferret owners… i need some help!!?

i acquired a baby mink last night… it was on the side of the road almost got hit by a car =(. i went right to petco and bought everything they told me to get for it…hes a very friendly little guy doesnt bite or anything. i realize they are not legal to have as pets but are very good pets if found young enough. i remember something about ferrents needing to be fixed and have scent glands removed as well as rabies shots? but if i have an illegal pet how can i have that done? i realize i should have just left it… but it was in the middle of a main road!! =( what can/should i do?
haha ohh yes its definitly a mink…all black with a tiny white chin… how do i call vets and ask if they will vaccinate a mink for me? wont they want to take him from me? theres a wildlife rehab center about half an hour from me… maybe i should give them a call?

You’re talking about a MINK, right? An actual mink, not a ferret?

Yeah, they’re illegal to have as pets, but I’m sure you can find a vet who will see him if you call around. Female ferrets need to be fixed or bred or they will die, but males are just fine. I’m sure that applies to minks as well. They do NOT need their scent glands removed, this just prevents them from being able to ‘poof’ when they are startled. This is not a spay like a skunk, but more like a fart. I think this is the same for minks as well.

As for the shots… I would be extremely wary about having a pet without a rabies shot, especially an illegal pet, because if it ever bites anyone it will be put down immediately to test for rabies if you do not have proof of the shots. I would search for a vet who will be discrete. Call around.
