Any easier way to stalk hunt with a bow?
I am hunting in north Alabama, and walking around with the bow usually results in seeing a white tail running away. I have a summit climbing tree stand, but little patience and a slight fear of heights. Any suggestions???
Gun season doesn’t open till the middle of november. I really like shooting a bow also. Anybody have any luck with ground blinds?
It’s not as much of a fear of heights thing as it is a worry of part of my climbing tree stand coming out or something going wrong while I’m 20 feet off the ground. It seems like it slips a lot and makes it feel not safe at all. And, yes I do wear a safety harness.
Also can anyone tell me if ground blinds will work if you set them up the same day you plan on hunting them?
Stalking Whitetails in ANY state is extremely tough. The advantage goes heavy in favor of the Deer, after all you are on “their” turf, and there is just no way you can beat their incredible sense of smell, not to mention their hearing…
I hunt with people that like you have issues with height and I can tell you right from the git go that ground blinds are the answer. You have to be very conscious of the scents you give off so a cover scent is a required basic. Also cut your brush fresh with vegetation native to the area you are going to hunt in. This will help you blend in with your surroundings. Camouflage is also a necessity and another basic you can’t do without. Try and build you ground blind close to but not on top of an “intesecting” active Deer trail. About 5-10 yards is close enough. Also try to find an area where not only the trails are active, (with fresh sign,tracks and scat (Deer Poo)but if possible is near a natural water source. Try and move as little as possible and have your bow ready with a nocked arrow, waiting in your lap for an opportunity. Ground blinds have the disadvantage of not giving you much warning when a Deer is approaching or right on top of you. You won’t see them coming towards you from a distance like you would if you were up a tree in your Summit. Not to worry though, you will see plenty of Deer this way in Alabama. I hunt an area in Alabama NE of Lewis Smith Lake, and have for the last 12 years or so. Of the Deer I’ve killed there, I’ve gotten at least 5 from ground blinds.I know from personal experience that ground blinds work just fine….Good Luck!
