It is very hard to walk my german shepherd?
every time i walk him, he starts to pull and when it is usually going well, he just stops. that is what is frustrating and he pulls from going to that direction i want to go to. he just stands there like a tree. how do i make him stop doing this? i use a harness and i have a metal chain leash. he is a 5 month old german shepherd puppy.
First of all, get the harness off of your dog. Harnesses were created for tracking and carting – all of which requires a dog to pull. Also, get rid of the chain leash. Buy a martingale collar (not a choke collar) and a leather lead. When you are walking him, if he starts to pull, turn around and go the other direction. If he stands still and won’t move, use a treat (like a sliced up hot dog) to encourage him to move forward.
German Shepherds are intelligent dogs and it won’t take him long to figure it out. They also need A LOT of socializing. You need to enroll him in a puppy or beginners course at a dog club (you can find on in your area at www.akc.org).
